Fastweb.com and Scholarships.com are search engines that can be used to find and apply for outside scholarships. Do not pay for scholarship applications!

Tips & Tricks When Applying for Scholarships

  • Don’t let others do the work.
    • They can tell when parents write an essay.
  • Be personal and passionate!
    • Now is the time to focus on your strengths and what makes you unique from other applicants.
    • Look beyond just your GPA/ACT/SAT scores when answering questions.
  • Know your audience.
    • Your answers should be relevant to that organization’s mission.
    • Present yourself professionally.
    • You can still be professional while showcasing your personality in your writing/interview.
  • Stay organized and don’t wing it!
    • Use bullet points to create an outline and gather your thoughts before writing the essay.
    • A long essay does not necessarily equal a good essay! Try not to repeat the same point multiple times or use wordy sentences just to lengthen an essay.
    • Don’t wait until the last minute! Priority may be given to early submissions.
  • Proofread, have a friend, parent, and teacher proofread, & then proofread again.
    • Check spelling, grammar, and do not use texting language/slang.
    • Read your essay out loud to make sure it flows and answers the prompt accurately.
  • Request letters of recommendation in advance.
    • Try to give at least two weeks notice.
  • Clean up your social media presence (Yes, ALL social media!)
  • Practice your interview skills!
    • Some bigger scholarships may include an interview in their process.
  • Send a thank you note.
    • They are investing time and money in you. Remember to show your appreciation.
