About Concordia

Concordia is a city in and the county seat of Cloud County, Kansas, United States. It is located along the Republican River in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains in north-central Kansas. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 5,395. The community combines the finest qualities of small town living with the educational, cultural, and business advantages found in many larger cities.

Concordia Landmarks

The Broadway Plaza is Concordia’s premier outdoor public event space. Home to 100-150 events each year, the Plaza is the gateway to Concordia’s downtown shopping, dining and entertainment district. With a giant LED screen to watch games and movies, a splash pad for kids, and a stage for concerts, the space entertains residents, neighbors and guests. 

The famous Brown Grand Theatre, restored to its original 1907 splendor, features live entertainment, including plays and concerts. The Brown Grand Players and the Community Concert Association welcome student membership and participation. The stage is also home to at least one of the college’s plays or musicals each year.

The National Orphan Train Complex is located in a fully restored Union Pacific Depot. The museum is dedicated to the preservation of the stories and artifacts of those who were part of the Orphan Train Movement from 1854-1929, when more than 250,000 children from New York City were relocated to rural areas across the country. Opened in 2007, the complex offers museum displays, Orphan Train archives, a gift shop, and research materials.

The Nazareth Convent is home to the Sisters of St. Joseph. The five-story red brick building with towers reaching seven stories is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

At 140 feet long, the 6,400 brick Whole Wall Mural is the longest sculpted brick mural in the United States. It is located on the east wall of the Cloud County Museum Annex and the Cloud County Tourism office. The wall depicts the history of Cloud County, and was sculpted, in pieces, at Cloud County Community College.
