Special
Needs Accommodation Planning
It's a SNAP!
Cloud
County Community College wants all students to succeed. Cloud makes a
variety of academic support services available to all students. However,
Cloud understands that some students have disabilities which require
special accommodations. Receiving these accommodations can be a SNAP.
What
is SNAP?
SNAP (Special Needs Accommodation Planning) assists
students who have documented disabilities in accessing the services they
need to succeed at Cloud County Community College. At the end of the SNAP
process students receive a SNAP summary that gives them the right to ask
classroom instructors for needed accommodations.
Who should apply?
Students who:
1. receive accommodations through high school Special Education programs
or
2. have worked with Vocational Rehabilitation or a physician to document
disabilities that directly affect their classroom performance.
What services can SNAP students receive?
While federal law does not allow for the alteration of course
requirements, SNAP students can receive reasonable accommodations
including academic adjustments and auxiliary aids.
Academic adjustments are
accommodations such as lengthened time to complete tests or a decreased
course load. Auxiliary aids are accommodations such as tape recorders,
magnifying glasses, lift keys or special seating. These accommodations are
only made available to students who have completed the SNAP process.
How do I start the SNAP process?
Students wishing to receive special accommodations should contact Cloud's
SNAP Coordinator at extension 275.

completed Vocational Rehabilitation Screening, or whose test results are
more than three years old should:
1. have
the disability diagnosis made by a licensed professional in a field
directly related to the disability
2. realize that the college can refer students to appropriate
professionals, but does not diagnosis or pay for diagnose of
disabilities
3. provide Cloud's SNAP Coordinator with a report detailing the
disability, along with reasonable and appropriate accommodations for
that disability.
Continuing
the SNAP process
The SNAP coordinator edits a one page SNAP SUMMARY listing reasonable
accommodations based upon the submitted reports.
Students
make a SNAP appointment with the coordinator to:
- discuss the submitted reports
- determine the accommodations that have been the most successful
- make needed changes to the SNAP summary
- sign the SNAP SUMMARY
Students
receive copies of their SNAP SUMMARY to give to instructors. The SNAP
coordinator can NOT disclose that a student has a disability and is
eligible for SNAP accommodations; only the student can disclose this
information to instructors.
Once an instructor receives a SNAP SUMMARY, the student has the right to
ask that instructor for any of the accommodations listed on the SNAP
summary. The instructor has the right to discuss the original reports with
the SNAP coordinator.
Students' SNAP SUMMARIES are kept on file in the coordinator's office
throughout the students' career at Cloud County Community College.
Students may make additional copies of their SNAP SUMMARY in the Student
Services office.
Cloud County Community College is proud to support students with
disabilities affecting their classroom performance. Receiving appropriate
accommodations can be a SNAP.
Additional Student Responsibilities
Student Must:
Request appropriate academic adjustments and auxiliary aids on a timely
basis. Timely is defined as enough time prior to the needed accommodation
so that proper documentation and arrangements can be made. In some cases
this could take several months.
Provide ACT, ASSET or COMPASS scores that accurately represent the
student's academic abilities when appropriate accommodation is made.
Show ability to benefit from college instruction (minimums defined by
ACT/ASSET/Compass Placement Guidelines) in order to enroll in courses
outside the developmental area.
Provide personal care attendants, individually prescribed devices (such as
wheelchairs, glasses, and canes), readers for personal use or study
(readers needed outside the classroom), or other devices or services of a
personal nature. Kansas Vocational Rehabilitation Services may be willing
to provide or finance some or all of these if the disabled student has
been accepted for services by that agency.
Choose whether or not to apply for the services and assistance of the
Kansas Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Meet the Kansas Rehabilitation
Services' eligibility requirements if those services and assistance's are
sought.
