Cloud County Community College freshman Benard Keter captured the individual title in the Region 6 Cross Country Championships at Westar Energy/Prairie Ridge Park on Monday.
Keter turned in a winning time of 25:20.60 to finish nearly 15 seconds ahead of second-place Edwin Serem, Butler Community College.
“Benard had a tremendous race today. Even with uneven and sandy footing he won with a course record, I believe, at 25:20,” Cloud County coach Drew Mahin said.
The Cloud County men were ninth as a team with 291 points.
Colby claimed the team title with 35 points. Allen Community College was second with 73 and Garden City was third with 81.
Cloud County was fourth in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division with 129 points. Colby was first with 32 points. Garden City was second iwth 58 and Hutchinson was third with 75.
The Cloud County women finished 11th in the region with 259 points.
Johnson County won the meet with 53 points. Butler was second with 67 and Hutchinson was third with 71.
Cloud County was sixth in the Jayhawk West with 152 points. Butler was first with 37 points. Hutchinson was second with 43 and Dodge City was third with 72.
Desi Thomas placed 70th for the Cloud County men with a time of 30:13.6. Shilo Goracke finished 75th in 30:31.40. Nate Elder ran 31:13.80 to place 85th. Hunter Hosler placed 86th in 31:19.3 and Quinton Isaacson was 90th in 31:41.50.
The Cloud County women were led by Katie Lambert, a freshman from Concordia, who finished 29th with a time of 22:12.90. Valentine Kitur placed 59th for the Thunderbirds in 24:04.60. Kendra Alcorn crossed in 67th place in 24:32.40. Allyne Purdy finished 79th in 26:59.40 and Brianna Wickersham was 83rd in 28:05.90.
Cloud County will have Keter, Goracke, Isaacson and Katie Lambert competing in the NJCAA National Meet at Fort Dodge, Iowa on Nov. 9.
