What is the ABE/GED Program

What is the ABE/GED Program?

The ABE/GED program provides individuals the opportunity to:

Ø      receive instruction for the GED test resulting in a Kansas High School diploma

Ø      improve their everyday living skills in the areas of math, reading, and writing

Ø      prepare for employment

Ø      improve technology skills

Who is eligible?

Individuals who are at least 16 years of age and are not enrolled in school are eligible.  Sixteen and seventeen year olds must present disclaimers from the school district in which they live.  Students in the program vary widely in ages and abilities.

How much does it cost?

Classes are free with a small materials fee.  Enrolled students may take a GED practice test, which is required in order to take the Official GED,  free of charge.  The Official GED Test  costs $68.

What is involved?

Individuals wishing to enroll in the ABE/GED program must attend orientation before joining the program.  Orientations are scheduled four times during the year.

Following orientation, students are placed in classes according to their assessment scores, goals, and daily schedule.  Both daytime and evening classes are available in most subjects.

Classes are small so students get to know their teacher and classmates well.  In addition to books, computers are used.  All teachers work closely with students and try to understand the individual’s educational needs.

Where are classes held?

Classes in Concordia meet in Room 103 and 100 of Technical West which is across the street from the main campus building at Cloud County Community College, 2221 Campus Drive.

Clay Center classes are held in Dreams Unlimited at 408 Lincoln Street.

Junction City classes are held at the Geary County Campus of Cloud County Community College located at 631 Caroline Avenue.

What are the rewards?

Students may be able to:

Ø      find a better job.

Ø      go on to college or a technical school.

Ø      feel better about themselves.

Ø      provide a good example for their children.

All students, once they pass the GED test, are eligible to participate in a graduation ceremony, complete with caps and gowns and a reception.
