Severe Weather Awareness

• Lightning is a big threat with any thunderstorm.
  
  
  • If you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.
  • When you hear thunder, you should immediately go to a safe shelter.
  • Safe shelter from lightning is a substantial building or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle.
    
    
• Floods are a significant danger - Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown
  
  
  • Most flood fatalities are vehicle-related.
  • Never attempt to cross, by foot or by vehicle, a road covered by water.
  • Less than a foot of fast-moving water can move a car.
    
    
• Be aware, know the basic tornado safety tips
  
  
  • A tornado watch means that severe weather, including tornados, are possible in and close to the watch area. You should pay attention to changing weather conditions.
  • A tornado warning means that a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar. Anyone inside a warning area should take shelter immediately.
  • You should take shelter immediately if you notice:
    • Large hail and heavy rain
    • Blowing dust and debris in the air
    • A roar, or continuous rumble, which doesn't fade like thunder.
  • The best shelter is in a basement, under a sturdy piece of furniture.
  • If no basement is available, go to the lowest floor and find a central room. Avoid windows.
