General Education Philosophy

General Education Philosophy

General Education broadens students’ understanding of the world and prepares them for civic, social, and employment responsibilities. General education advances students’ abilities to function in dynamic environments by enhancing communication, stimulating critical thinking, exploring modes of inquiry, developing creative work, fostering constructive attitudes regarding learning, and promoting academic literacy.

General Education Committee Purpose

The general education committee maintains the list of general education courses for degrees and certificates. The committee monitors the General Education Artifact process and procedures, develop and modify general education outcomes, review the results of artifact assessment, and provide guidance on the development of common or model assignments.
The faculty representatives from all academic departments are on the general education committee whether those departments are responsible for general education courses or not.
In addition to general education outcomes, the committee also developed the Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) and the rubrics for the ILOs. The five ILOs are distributed throughout courses in each program and assessed in those courses.

General Education Outcomes

The five disciplines that participate in general education courses developed general education outcomes (GEOs). The five disciplines are Communications, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, and Behavioral & Social Science. All courses in the General Education Course list assess the GEOs in one common or model assignment. The student work (Artifacts) are collected each term and a sample subset are evaluated each summer.

Institutional Learning Outcomes

The five institutional learning outcomes are outcomes we expect of every graduate of Cloud County Community College. These outcomes "...prepare students to lead successful lives..." whether as they transfer to another institution or enter the workforce.
