The Substation Technician is a key individual in “keeping the lights on” for our everyday lives. A technician is involved in maintenance, inspection, repair, construction, and replacement of equipment within a substation. These tasks require sound knowledge of electricity and power delivery systems, both theory and practical applications.
There is an increasing demand for Substation Technicians in Kansas and across the country. All wind farms have at least one substation with many having multiples. There is a constant increase in the demand for transmission lines to transport the wind power generated in western Kansas to the grid in the metropolitan areas to the west and east. With this increased demand also comes an increase in the number of substations. In addition, 60% of the current work force will be retiring within the next 5 years making this career path a very appealing opportunity.
Here at Cloud County Community College, you will learn about motors, generators, voltage regulation, transformers, and system protection provided through circuit breakers, re-closers, fuses, lightening arrestors, and system grounding. All aspects of this program are capped by attention to safety. Safety is the premier function of any task a substation technician undertakes. Upon successful completion of the certificate program you will be well prepared to begin a four year apprenticeship with many of the major utilities in the Midwest and beyond.
