Media students, publications win awards
(CONCORDIA, KS) – Media students and their student publications at Cloud County Community College’s Concordia campus won several awards during the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press (KACP) Spring Awards conference April 6-7 in Wichita, KS.
The student magazine, "The Bolt," earned a silver medal in the All-Kansas competition. In this competition, all issues of the magazines from the previous academic year are judged. The issues are judged against all other student-produced magazines from colleges around the state, both 2 and 4-year institutions.
The 2007-2008 school year was the first year for the CCCC student magazine.
"I was so pleased with how competitive our magazine was in this competition," Student Publications adviser Jenny Acree said. "Doing that well in our first year of producing the magazine makes me really excited to see how we'll do in the future."
Individual winners in the student magazine competitions include:
Jessica Brucken, Seneca, Kan. - Feature writing, Honorable mention
Cody Adams, Concordia, Kan. - Headlines, 1st place; Feature design, 1st place; Cover design, 1st place
Momoe Nojiri, Oita, Japan - Cover design, 1st place and 3rd place; Mini-Feature design, 2nd place; Feature design, 3rd place; Infographics, 2nd place.
The student newspaper, "T-Bird Times," earned a bronze medal in the All-Kansas competition. The paper is judged against student newspapers from all the community colleges in Kansas. Last year, the paper entered the competition, but was not a medal winner.
"Community college journalism programs in Kansas are very good," Acree said. "Our students have been working hard this year and continue to improve. The bronze medal is a reward for all of their hard work."

Melissa Knox, Clyde, Kan. - Sports Photography, 1st place, News Photography, Honorable mention and Honorable mention
Eleven student media students along with publications adviser Jenny Acree attended the KACP held in Oldtown. In addition to attending the awards banquets, students attended sessions at the Wichita Eagle and listened to a variety of speakers present information on media law, advertising and job opportunities in the industry.
Sophomores attending the conference included Jessica Brucken, Seneca, Kan.; Jessica Hay, Cody Adams and Marc Collins all from Concordia, Kan.; Vance Carlson and Anthony Wiley, Belleville, Kan. Freshmen attending the conference were Tahra Gallion, Mahaska, Kan., J.Ryan Roberts, Abilene, Kan., Melissa Knox, Clyde, Kan., Stepheny Frederiksen, Lakin, Kan.; and Skyler Nosker, Assaria, Kan.
