High school Family and Consumer Science classes from Linn, Abilene, Concordia and Republic County schools were on the Concordia campus of Cloud County Community College November 14 to participate in an Early Childhood Education Conference.
Special activities were held to celebrate Kansas Reads to Children week. Highway Patrol Trooper Van Meter read to children from Cloud’s Children’s Center, Melinda Trecek’s Family Day Care Home, and the four year old preschoolers from Concordia Public School. High school students participated in workshops on creating Science experiments and Project Boards, and story telling tips. College students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education curriculum also provided information about college, practicums. Next year on April 16, the ECE Department will host an Early Childhood Education Competition for area high school students. The competition will include a Quiz Bowl, Project Board Displays, Science Experiments, and Story Telling.
Joan Robison, Director of the Early Childhood Education program, stated, “This was an excellent day, especially when you can bring together young children, high school students and college students to celebrate Kansas Reads to Children, which is an annual event sponsored by the State of Kansas Library Association. This year’s book selection focused on safety and how to remain safe, which is a vital lesson to be learned by all present. Trooper Van Meter had a great message for the young children about car safety. We were so pleased that Trooper Van Meter was able to read and interact with the young children, and they responded well. I know that this will become an annual event, hopefully involving libraries, parents, the children and students. We are looking forward to our competition in the Spring when we can honor hard work, innovation and creativity for the Family and Consumer Science Students in our area High schools. “
