Black History program set Feb. 26
(CONCORDIA, KS) – History teacher Joseph Zellner will portray an African American soldier in the American Civil War at a Feb. 26 presentation at Cloud County Community College’s Concordia campus. The event coincides with Black History Month.
Zellner’s character interpretation and presentation is entitled, “The Colored Soldier in the Civil War.” He portrays Pvt. Solomon Pierce of Monson, Mass., a member of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Company A. The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an infantry regiment, was one of the first official African American units in the United States Armed Forces.
Zellner teaches high school history in Concord, Mass. He is a contributing author to the sourcebook series, “Making Freedom: African Americans in United States History” and the recipient of national and regional National Endowment for the Humanities research and study grants. A Civil War re-enactor, Zellner is currently researching black and white relations in the United States.
The free program, sponsored by the CCCC Student Activities Office, begins at
7 p.m. in Cook Theatre and is open to the public.
