“Cloudburst” to feature music, drama, art groups

(CONCORDIA, KS) –  Cloud County Community College students involved in Concordia campus music, drama and art groups will present the first annual “Cloudburst Revue”, April 30 and May 1 at the college’s Cook Theatre.

The revue begins at 7 p.m. and is free to the public.

Performing will be Rolling Thunder Pep Band, Great Society Singers, Thunderbolt Dance Team and Cloud Circle Drama Players.  Works by graphic design students also will be on display under the direction of Instructor Nick Jones.

“We’re launching a new event with Cloudburst Revue,” said Patrick Sieben, Rolling Thunder director and the faculty member who initiated the idea.  “It’s going to be a lively night of entertainment for our audiences and fun for our students.”

The Rolling Thunder Pep Band will perform a variety of selections on stage, some in marching band formations.

Great Society Singer Director Dr. Everett Miller said vocal numbers will range from multicultural to gospel, much of the repertoire from recent choir tours in Missouri and Kansas.

The Thunderbolt Dance team is under the direction of Carleen Nordell.

The Cloud Circle Drama Players, directed by Susan Sutton, will present four short dramas.

“Crimes of the Heart” tells the story of a wacked-out reunion among three sisters from Hazelhurst, Miss.  Their mother hung herself – along with the family cat, and Dad is long gone.  It’s Lenny’s 30th birthday, but nobody noticed.  To top things off, Lenny’s pet horse was struck by lightning the night before.  Meg, the middle sister, arrives in a tizzy from Hollywood after getting the news that youngest sister, Babe, is in jail for trying to shoot her husband.  “Crimes of the Heart”, by Beth Henley, was the “toast of Broadway” in 1980 and later was made into a major movie.  In this scene, Natalie Elliott plays Lenny and Ebonee Carter, Meg.

The 1987 drama, “Fences”, is by African American playwright, August Wilson.  It’s the story of Troy Maxson who is building a fence in his backyard.  The ongoing fence project is a symbol of the many fences people build throughout their lives, many of which cut off friends, family and potential.  In this scene, the audience views the conflict between a father and son.  A son is trying to follow his own path while the father is trying to make his son into a person he was never intended to be.   Neksy Metelus plays father, Troy Maxon, and Stanley Dervil, his son, Cory.

“The Old Folks”, a Carol Burnett Show television sketch,” features two recurring show favorites – Molly and Bert.  Whenever the camera showed the two rocking chairs, the audience knew the fun would soon start.  Tim travel back to 1968 with Joan Underbakke as Molly, Patrick Sieben as Bert and Matt Rodriguez at Sonny for a typical evening on the front porch.

Darryl Odom also will present “Red Hot Soccer Sensation.” Leo Duran will be the narrator.
