(CONCORDIA, KS) -- The T-Birds soared to wins in their first regular season games, playing against Northeast Oklahoma A&M. The women won their game 3-1 and the men swept the Golden Norsemen 4-0 in games played at Junction City on Saturday.
"I thought the girls played really well. They possessed the ball and kept their composure well." Assistant Coach Tyler Gundersen said.
Freshman Evelyn Fajardo scored the first goal for the women, on a through ball in the 18th minute. A 'through ball' is a pass between defenders, to a forward player that will likely take a shot. This move is sometimes called a 'through pass'.
Sophomore Margo Olivar scored the second goal off a free kick from 20 yards out, during the 30th minute.
Freshman Jessica Baynton scored the third goal for the T-Birds off a give-and-go pass with Fajardo 2 minutes into the second half.
A 'Give & Go' is a pass where the initial passer passes and then breaks to receive a return pass. It is sometimes called a 'one-two' pass.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kadie Kutschka registered 13 saves during the course of the game. While A&M out shot the T-birds with shots and shots on goal, they failed to tally more goals.
"The ladies put what they learned in practice to good use," according to Coach Gundersen.
Head Soccer Coach Steven Given said, "Daisy, Evelyn, and Margot were all unbelievably good. It was a good win for the whole team."
The T-bird men shut out the Golden Norsemen, scoring 4 goals in the process. They out shot their opponents 23-6 in attempts alone.
The first goal was registered by Freshman Bernard Rene, with an assist by Freshman Colm Lambe during the 12th minute.
Freshman William Broomfield scored the second goal during the 44th minute, off a penalty kick.
Freshman Julio Flores scored the third goal on a shot from 8 yards out, at the 35th minute of the second half.
Freshman Ivan Jatoba made the fourth shot, which was headed in by Flores, with only 6 minutes left in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julio Tovalin recorded 4 saves on 12 shots.
Cloud played part of the second half with only 10 players, after losing Rene to a red card. Rene received the penalty for 'playing overly physical'.
"It was a very physical game and our players rose to the challenge," Given pointed out.
Given noted, "Both teams played well. Everyone talked, played together. I hope that we will continue to play together this well; if we do, we'll have a good season."
"The only bad part of the game was losing Colm (Lambe) with a separated shoulder." Given said. It is estimated that Colm will be out for a few weeks because of his injury.
As a result of the Lady T-Birds' win, Assistant Coach Gundersen will shave his head. Gundersen was hoping to inspire the lady T-Birds for Saturday's game with his promise, and he seems to have succeeded.
