Special Populations

Cloud County Community College recognizes that, at any given time, our vocational-technical students may be at risk or may not be meeting the goals established by a particular course or program. Funds from the Carl Perkins Program Improvement Grant may be accessed to provide services to students meeting the special populations criteria. In the past, sign language interpreters, adaptive technologies, and other assistive materials have been provided by the grant.

The following individuals are categorized as a "special population" as defined by the Perkins Act of 1998:

• Individuals with disabilities;
• Individuals from economically disadvantaged families (including foster children);
• Individuals preparing for nontraditional training and employment;
• Single parents (including single pregnant women);
• Displaced homemakers; and/or
• Individuals with other barriers to educational achievement (including individuals with limited English proficiency.

To reduce the chances of academic failure, CCCC strives to identify barriers to educational success and provide students with appropriate services to assist them in attaining their goals. Some of the services available to students are:

• Peer tutors;
• Tutors;
• Learning Skills Center developmental courses;
• Retention Specialist;
• Academic Advisement;
• Career Counseling;
• Newsletter (Geary County Campus);
• Distance Learning (ITV and Internet);
• Evening Courses;
• Adaptive Technology (as deemed appropriate); and
• Sign Language Interpreter (as deemed appropriate).
