Carl Perkins Grant

Benefits to Cloud County Community College

The Carl Perkins Program Improvement Grant allows the Cloud County Community College vocational-technical programs to realize additional funds to enhance the education opportunities offered. Each spring the grant application is submitted based on the expressed needs of the faculty. The funds are used to provide equipment, professional development opportunities, and special programming for students.

Each fall, final federal allocation is awarded through the Kansas Board of Regents.

Background

When asked why he supports the Perkins Act of 1998, Congressman Bill Goodling, Pennsylvania, explained his decision this way:

“For too long we paid little attention to the 75% of youths who do not go on and complete some 4-year college degree. Our youth should receive a high-quality education no matter what they plan to do in the future.” “In today’s vocational-technical education programs, students need a very high-quality education for today’s world. These students need strong academics and relevant skills in order to thrive in today’s economy.” (Through this bill) “we have three overarching goals: strengthening academics; broadening the opportunities for vocational-technical education students; and sending more money to the classroom.”
