1st Place Entry - The Birds and the Bees
Author: Janice Stangel, Learning Skills Center
When young, we were taught what we needed to know about growing up.
Tonight, the newscast said the killer bees are coming.
It also said the birds with killer flu are coming.
In contemplating this, it gives a whole new twist to. . . "the birds and the bees."
Honorable Mention - An Experiment Gone Awry
Author: Todd Leif, Physical Science Chair
In the laboratory, my research colleague gently pulled out her needle-nose pliers.
My hand is still shaking. An experiment of this nature is always delicate.
Shake it twice, it's okay. But shake it three times-you're playing with it too much.
Ouch! Caught in the zipper again! My finger needs a Band-Aid.
Honorable Mention - Favorite Neighbor
Author: Brenda Hanson, Career Center Director
Dean knelt down and crumpled the warm garden earth between his fingers.
He realized he would soon become one with that which bore the fruits of his labor.
He plucked the sprouting weeds hiding under the radish leaves.
The sun glistened on his plaid shirt and the angelic rays blessed him.
What a beautiful day.

Author: Jim Banks
"Ha, ha, I've finally won! You idiot, that's a person's name!
You think you're so hot, being able to spell everything.
Well, this raging inferno of spelling mastery has got you beat today, my friend!
Oh wait, that is how you spell Esquire. . .Stupid computers.
Mark my words, SPELLCHECK, we will finish this another day. . ."
Honorable Mention - Conflict Within The Soul
Author: Alicia Winslow
Sitting in her room, one slash later,
she watches the blood ooze from her wrist, wishing her life away.
As thoughts of loved ones grieving and memories of her childhood return,
she puts the razor down, and life goes on.
Tomorrow will be a new day, but blood will ooze again.
Honorable Mention - Letter From Home
Author: Cody Moulton
Dr. John,
It must be horrible to live each day in uncertainty.
To be forced to kill another country's people.
To be stranded in hell itself for nine months.
To live with the disease and filth!
So it is with great regret I must inform you I have found someone else.
Love Forever
